FILSONIK
Light of Day EP

Percussive instrumental deep house isn’t something the world is especially in short supply of right now and if it were sold in barrels you could bet it’d be cheaper than oil. But there’s always room for a good new tune and NY newcomer Filsonik seems to have the requisite ear for a good tune. ‘Du Bai’ is a big, brooding minimal groove with a little hint of Fela Kuti in the sparsely utilised horn snatches and vocal whoops, a definite work-the-Eqs track for the likes of Joe Claussell. Meanwhile. ‘Lori’ takes a more percussive path with a warmer bed of slow-moving deep strings and a gently rumbling bassline. Heavily atmospheric grooves of rare quality. Watch this name.

Quentin Harris presents Cordell McClary - The Unreleased mixes

'Got 2 Re-Love' vocal/'Traveling' Instrumental

One of our favourite labels has been kind enough to mail us a copy of their latest nugget, one of only 800 copies pressed of these unreleased mixes, it has to be pointed out. Fun can be had by all with the instrumental mix of the wonderful ‘Traveling’ track, so get those acapellas at the ready and create your very on garage groove. The ‘Got 2 Re-love’ is a finely crafted slice of “real house” from Harris, where Mc Clary respects the soulful groove and puts his shoulder into the job at hand. He slides notes all over the shop as if he was buttering the groove with his very low cholesterol, saturated in soul fats. Harris is in a fairly upbeat mood as he adds a little extra energy into his work on this occasion, leaving the deeper , smoother sound in the care of the ‘Traveling’ instrumetal.

Lefunken feat Tyrah 'Angel' Franck Roger remix

One of my own personal labels hits out with a remix from a 2004 outing, enlisting the talents of French producer Franck Roger for remix duty. It pains me to say nothing nice about the French , but Roger has blessed us with a delicious shuffling garage stormer that is deep and soulful. Knocking beats stumble along as Tyrah’s dreamy vocals swirl about the mix like cream being poured into a steamy cup of coffee. A dub finds a groove being pressured by piano stabs, but fear not, even Tyrah is welcomed back into open arms, allowing us to enjoy her sweet tone jus’ a lil’longer.

Steal Vybe 'Grooves & Melodies' Spacekat

'Rise With The Sun' is a musical story that unfolds into a fairytale jazzy house workout of unprecedented quality and finesse. Every step of the way is like walking on air. Floaty flute, breezy strings and an incidental keyboard generated bass that peeps into the soulful groove periodically form foundations. This is Steal Vybe on top form and if 'Rise With The Sun' wasn't enough to convince you to buy this single, then perhaps the equally jazz soaked 'Let It Play' will. Gentle but plucky hand claps are rushed by jazzy keyboard parts, soaring strings and complicated drums that add fizz to the workout. 'Glide' features yet more wonderful strings and flute, which trek tirelessly over the busy mumbling bass and conga gripped beats. Soothing vocals repeat the same couple of lines effortlessly over the blissful backing. Three stinging jazzy house jams from Steal Vybe.

Quentin Harris featuring Cordell McClary 'Got 2 Love' Spacekat

From the people that created the sublime ‘Travelling’ track, which was bestowed with ample praises on these pages, comes yet another slick garage anthem for our aural perusal and pleasure. Modern soul fans will instantly recognise the replayed Barry White notes taken from his energetic dancer, ‘Your Sweetness Is My Weakness’, (20th Century Records). The mood on the ‘Vocal’ mix is that of a quality mid pace dancer encrusted with sparkling jazzy keys, busy picked guitars and crammed with sweet strings and buzzy little horn blasts. The ‘Got 2 Re-Love Dub’ has a little more edge thanks to the metallic and timbale beats, which act as a springboard for bouncing elasticised keyboards. The strings are highlighted here, really coming to the fore and leading us straight down to the fantastic keys solo.

QUENTIN HARRIS Feat. CORDELL McCLARY “Traveling” Spacekat
A top notch stand out production from Quentin Harris. Long & full of great hooks & solos with a subtle percussive quality throughout all help to make this a Dancers favourite. Male vocals of this class are unusually rare & difficult to find. Out now!

Quentin Harris Presents Cordell McClary "Traveling"

Like a well-oiled machine the sound here is wonderfully smooth and reliable with the shuffling but reassuringly gentle percussion providing the mid-pace motion for Cordell McClary to drop his innocent vocal. McClary keeps the propulsion moving forward with the soulful fuel that burns like a glowing winter's fire, as do the "No, no, no" male backing vocalists who share McClary's desperation at the state of play in their lives. His voice wants to make me weep like a baby as he relays feeling of his desire to travel to a better place. He's running scared of the world's troubles and he seeks refuge in a more idyllic world where shelter hopefully awaits. Something we all wish we could do from time to time, I'm sure. Feeble but vital synths squiggle over the percussion that is straight outta the Body & soul skool of how to groove. Stunning stuff and essential food for your soulful appetite that will find your soul calories going through the roof, after eatin' this shit up. Don't worry though, you will burn them off very quickly as you hit the floor to work out to this soulful monster.

Duron Tarik Feat Children Speaking – “Not Over”
(Spacekat Records)

How Long I ask, how long have I been waiting for this absolute gem of a track to reach these shores? Too long is the answer, ever since the CDR's promo's of this track have been floating around causing a stir in soulful House and Garage scene people have been trying to grab a copy. There's good reason too, in an age where middle-of-the-road seems to dominate the scene the few original, Soulful Garage tracks that emerge these days need to be highlighted, so consider this my advice to you. Duron Tarik delivers what could be one of the sweetest pieces of work on the Soulful scene this year, a solid production, nice percussion, a delicate instrumentation and a ever so rich vocal supplied by 'Children Speak - a Five piece Gospel choir. This is authentic House at it's best, the bass is thick and rolling, the keys are lively and gently seem to sprinkle themselves over the body of the track giving it a more emotional depth. There's a good churchy feel to this and the mood is definitely uplifting and positive. People who know Spacekat records will know that the labels name increasingly stands for a consistent soulful quality that has failed to let me down over the short course of it's history 'Not Over' in my opinion is one of their best releases to date. Essential, if you like your House. (JD)
